Teddy was a gangster. There is no other way to put it. And he was proud of it. When I showed up for my first day as a volunteer at the county juvenile detention center, I knew I was outside my comfort zone. I had no idea that Teddy was going to extend that comfort zone throughout the better part of a decade and take me hundreds of miles away from home.
